Gottschalk was the son of an English-German father and a mother of Karl is a film composer known for his work on the multiple award winning documentary Pickle Man. Karl's music has also been nominated for Best Music at the Milan Film Festival for his work on Lakeshore Blues, worked on orchestrations for the Korean blockbuster film Rampant, and recently wrote additional music for the popular Netflix series She-Ra. Gottschalk was also the first and, one might well argue, possibly the last pan-American composer and artist. Not only did he travel frequently outside the United States, as did, by necessity, most virtuoso pianists at the time; he also lived in South America and the Caribbean for extended periods of time, incorporating, without prejudice but with critical judgment, many local influences and musical traditions.

Although he is regarded as an American composer and musician, he spent most of his working career outside of the United States. The son of a Missouri governor, also named Louis, he studied music in Stuttgart, Germany, where his father, a judge, was American consul. Louis Moreau Gottschalk was his great-uncle.
